Your manuscript is ready to be edited and you’re anxious for the next phase of publishing your book.  Take a pause before reaching out for professional services. Have you determined your budget for book production? How much will you spend on marketing and promotion? Do you know how much all the components: editing, proofreading, typesetting, ISBN, printing, cover design, etc. should cost?

Let me tell you something that I tried to ignore for years. Writing is a business. If you want your book to be a success you can’t lose sight of that fact. You have to manage your dollars, cents and your timeline. You have to choose good vendors and professionals who will take good care of your manuscript while they have it in their hands. Before the first run of your book you should already know how many books, at the price you set, you need to sell to recover what you spend on book production, marketing and promotion.

By setting your budget, you go in knowing your max and if you are wise you will make sure you get the best you can buy. Most services and professional fees range in prices, but know the top of the range doesn’t guarantee you the best of the best and the bottom of the range doesn’t mean that you get the worse of the worse. Take the time to research what the fee ranges are so that you won’t find out later you paid entirely too much for any one service.  The budget is yours, you are in full control and you are a writer in the business of writing.

I have written and published six novels.  My latest book entitled Life on Fire, co-written with my sister Karen D. Bradley, was released in June 2015. If you are new to writing a book or self-publishing and want to follow along as I share what I’ve learned, either subscribe to receive my blog posts at or request to be added to my  group on Facebook, JB’s Writers Studio where the links to the posts will be shared. The group will also be a place for members to ask questions and share information.
